MENTOR

“Success is not defined by an individual’s accomplishments, but by the ability to help others succeed. When you pour into others, you enable them to achieve, and hopefully inspire them to do the same for someone else.”

While it’s great to help adults reach their goals, the future depends on youth. In life, as in the sport of stand-up paddling, there’s no tomorrow without the next generation.

Candice loves working with up-and-coming SUP athletes, because teaching them not only allows her to impart the skill and knowledge she’s acquired as an elite athlete, but to learn new things from her students as well. This symbiotic relationship was the genesis for the Junior Pro and Youth SUP Fiesta, an annual event Candice began in 2013 and is the largest of its kind.

Seeing her students improve their SUP skills and confidence through the years has been incredibly rewarding. As Candice observes, “Everyone needs someone to encourage them. Sometimes all it takes is one person to believe in you, to give you the courage to believe in yourself. I remember the people who encouraged me along the way. Without them, I’m not sure where I would be today.”

For Candice, “success” means giving others the ability to achieve—in perpetuity. Thinking about her philosophy as a mentor, she says, “Success is not defined by an individual’s accomplishments, but by the ability to help other people succeed. By pouring into others, you enable them to achieve and hopefully inspire them to do the same for someone else. Success is about paying it forward and carrying that momentum beyond your immediate circle.”

Candice is passionate about growing SUP and inspiring people both locally and globally. As the winningest champion and face of the sport, she sees it as her duty not only to coach stand-up paddlers, but to be a public ambassador for SUP.  She regularly coaches at the Performance Paddling Adult Training club and holds clinics for children and adults while she travels the world competing. Locally, in Orange County, California, she also works with Branches Church as a youth leader in high school ministry.
